Custom Chimes for
Sale
I get a lot of questions about what to do about lost or badly damage covers- questions mostly like where can I get a replacement cover? And the answer of course is that there are no stray vintage covers anywhere. My advice is always to consider it an opportunity to get creative and make or adapt something that will be unique and special… maybe adapt an old speaker enclosure, a radio case, a light sconce shade, cover a cigar box with wall paper… whatever.. or commission a craftsman to build something of your own imagination.
I have taken my own advice and when the opportunity arises, I have tried making imaginative covers for chimes that have either been separated from their covers, or were just so unappealing in the first place that a new cover was the thing to do.

Cymbal - Nutone
Classic |
Nutone Classic was an exellent quality chime with outstanding tone and volume courtesy of its unique bell design. Unfortunately, it was fitted with a cover made of a low grade nylon that withers with age. So what to do? Get creative! A cymbal serves as the cover and a danish style serving utensil holds a xylophone mallet, which can be used to strike the cymbal gong-style anytime you want to really get attention.

Mission Lantern - Nutone |
This chime started life as an unfortunate looking 1970’s Nutone, but had the appealing feature of low voltage lights powered by the chime circuit. The new craftsman style cover was custom designed and built by a skilled wood crafter using solid quarter-sawn white oak. The distinctive wood color was achieved by authentic ammonia fume staining- the same process used by the original makers of mission and arts & crafts furniture. The window lens is made from real mineral mica, emulating the choice of lamp shade makers of the period.

Philco - Nutone
L42 |
Nutone L42 had sort of an uninspired boxy cover over a robust 4-8 note Westminster Chimes mechanim. A perfect opportuntiy to liven things up some. This cover is made from a late 1940s Philco 48-460 "Hippo" radio case of subtly marbled bakelite, chopped and channeled for this hot rod of a door bell.

Nutone
L42 makeover |
This is a very mild custom indeed, but shows the effect of a minor cosmetic makeover. Started as a later NuTone L42, which had a fake wood grain painted cover, with a metal mesh grill and fabric behind the grill. I painted the cover with multiple oversprays of various browns and metallic golds, then used various fabric and fancy papers in combination with or without the original grill, for a number of different looks. Buyer of this chime may select one cosmetic treatment. Don't like any of these grill details? Imagine your own ulpholstey or drapery fabric, or maybe a bit of your wallpaper... whatever! |
